SMA2 absolute linear encoder, a linear position encoder for industrial automation.

SMA2 Absolute Linear Encoder | BiSS & SSI

The SMA2 is a contactless absolute linear encoder built for linear motors, torque motors, and precision motion control systems. It delivers accurate, repeatable position feedback with resolution down to 1 µm. As a result, it helps improve positioning accuracy and overall machine performance. Its contactless magnetic sensing technology eliminates mechanical wear, reduces maintenance, and ensures long-term reliability.

The encoder supports BiSS, SSI, and Panasonic RS485 interfaces, making integration with PLCs, servo drives, CNC machines, and industrial controllers fast and straightforward. In addition, an incremental output provides high-speed velocity feedback, while an error bit output simplifies diagnostics and system monitoring. The SMA2 also supports measuring lengths up to 8.2 m, making it well-suited for long-travel positioning applications.

For demanding motion systems, the SMA2 delivers sensor accuracy up to ±2 µm and repeatability of ±1 increment. It refreshes position data every 33 µs to support fast, precise control. Furthermore, engineers can choose resolutions from 50 µm to 1 µm to match their application requirements. Large mounting tolerances and a 0.1 to 0.6 mm sensing gap simplify installation and reduce alignment time.

A rugged IP67-rated aluminum housing protects the encoder from dust, water, oil, and other industrial contaminants. It also withstands 250 g shock, 10 g vibration, and temperatures from –25°C to +85°C. Therefore, the SMA2 performs reliably in harsh industrial environments. It is an excellent choice for robotics, semiconductor equipment, CNC machinery, packaging systems, machine tools, electronic assembly, and other high-speed automation applications that require precise absolute linear position feedback.
